Run For the Team 5K August 30, 2014

The York County Quick Response Team (QRT) along with Newberry Township Police Department  hosted the 8th Annual running of the Run For the Team 5K, held the morning of Saturday, August 30, 2014. The event involved a 5k run/walk  followed by an awards ceremony. The event took place in Newberry Township and Lewisberry Borough.

This event benefits the members of the York County Quick Response Team (QRT) to offset the cost of training and equipment. This county asset is essential in maintaining safety and order during high risk police incidents and arrests. The athletes support of the QRT 5k Run/Walk directly provides officers with the tools needed to perform their duties as members of the team.

The event took place in Lewisberry Borough Park. The race began at 8:30 sharp. The Age Groups are as follows: 14 & Under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 & over. Awards were given as follows: Overall male and female winners will receive a trophy and a gift certificate to a local restaurant. Prizes will be awarded to the top 2 male and female finishers in each age group (excluding overall winners).

Daniel knows this course. He is 9 years old. He has been running this race in Lewisberry since age 5 by himself. The first time he ran it, it was raining and the Lewisberry police kept a watch on him as he ran the 3.1 Mile Course. They were amazed that he could run it at such a young age by himself. Daniel beat many of the so called athletes in the race. Here is the reason why Daniel is no stranger to the Lewisberry Police Department.

Daniel and David started this 5K race. They had to run down the hill from the park in Newberry Township into Lewisberry Borough. They had to run to the other end of town turn around and run back up the hill to the finish line. David started this race but I was sure he would not finish. Yes, he can run a mile on a nearly flat surface but this is a 5K. If he can run this, then I have two long distance runners to train.

I Am Pissed Off!!!

Daniel ran this race in 25 Minutes, 24 Second. He came in Second in the 14 and Under Division. That was faster than the Hershey 5K race. This race had hills while the Hershey race did not. So Daniel improved over one week of practice.

When Daniel goes by the camera, do you see that water bottle that he is carrying? Here is why I am pissed off. For 5 years I trained him not to take water while running a 2K or 5K. Now if he was running 10 to 100 mile races then yes, take water. Daniel had less than 3 minutes to go in the race.

So what did Daniel do? On the hill, he stops at the water bar and goes drinking. You can see him in the video carrying his water bottle to the finish line. It was not hot at all this morning.  While he was doing that, an 11 year old boy (You can see him start with Daniel in Part 1) who did not stop for water ran past him. Here is the reason why Daniel came in second instead of first.

All I can say is that it is best to make these mistakes in races that do not mean anything. I would have had a heart attack if at age 16 he went to the WPIAA State Championship Run and he did that. So add that to making sure his shoes are tide, making sure he goes to the bathroom, and he knows the rule of the race. Believe it or not at State and National Meets I see 18 year old make these mistakes.

When it came time to hand out the awards, everyone who was present got their awards but Daniel. Then the Police sergeant  pointed to me and ask did he give Daniel his award for second place? I said no, so he called Daniel up and gave him his 2nd place medal and a free pass to Sky Round  Top.

What about David?

David is not Daniel. It is too early for David to attempt a 5K. David wanted to run with his brother and he quit when Daniel and the group of people ran away from him. Maybe next year David!

The 23rd Annual Ben & Tim Day 5k on August 23, 2014 !

The 23rd Annual Ben and Tim Day 5k Race was Daniel's first 5K as a 9 year old. Here are the statistics from that race.

Tim Russell 5K Run Part 1. This was the start of the race.  Mrs. Russell, one of the founders of this race came over to meet Stephanie. She has been friends with Stephanie for 5 years.

Name: Daniel  Tulloch
Bib #: 314
Gun Time: 25:47.8 ( 8:19/mile)
Chip Time: 25:47.8
Overall Place:   222/432
Age Group Place: 17/25 (Male  13 and Under)

Tim Russell 5K Run Part 2. This is the end of the 5K race with Daniel placing 17th with a time of 25 Minutes, 48 Seconds in the 12 and under division. This was a bad time for Daniel. We have to find out what the problem is and solve the problem.

This race showed that he is behind where I think he should be by 3 Minutes, 48 Seconds. Cross Country 2K and 5K races are not like Daniel's 800 M, 1500 M, or 3000 M races. In these races, Daniel runs on a track which is all the same. When Daniel runs Cross Country, he runs a 2K or 5K on hills, flat roads and different types  of terrain. Athletes can be good on one terrain while performing bad on others.  Each week, we have to train for that special terrain.

In this race, Daniel came in 17th in the 12 and under group.

The biggest surprise was David's performance.

This was 4 year old David's first meet as a 4 year old. This race was  1 mile long. As a 3 year old, David ran his first ever 1/2 mile run. My objective was for David to finish the race. His mother Stephanie kept David in sight for the whole mile. At 4 years old Daniel ran the mile on his own with no help and no one watching him.

But David did more than that, he sprinted the whole race.    David got 2nd place,
running a mile in 12 minutes 18 seconds. His only mistake is that he had to be directed to go across the finish line and not to his mother. This is understandable at his level of training.

2014 David running the 1 mile Tim Russell fun run -- Time 1 Minute

Under Pennsylvania State requirements, all he has to do is speed up 2 minutes and 18 seconds and he will have the qualifying time to graduate from High School. Many high school students have a hard time running a mile in 10 Minutes.

This is the end of David's 1 mile fun run where he finished in 2nd place with a time of 12 Minutes 18 Seconds. -- Time 1 Minute 47 Seconds

Preparing for the 2014 Cross Country Meets

You expected to see Daniel starting practice. But David just turned 4 and it is time to start practicing for his second cross country race that will take place this Saturday at Hershey High School. For the first time, he will be wearing a number on his chest and be on the roster.

That is all David cares about at this time is being on the roster and wearing a number on his chest like his brother. David practiced running fundamentals after daycare.  For a 4 year old, his running style is impressive. We have to work on arm movement but for a 4 year old, arm and leg coordination is very complicated. We are going to spend plenty of time on that this year.

Daniel has been at this for 5 years and I am still screaming "Out of Your Pocket, in your Ear!" as he runs around the track in practice. David practiced after daycare while Daniel practiced starting at 9:30 AM.  Here you see him getting out of bed and getting dressed for practice.

Daniel's practice starts with his quarter run warm up around the track. Then he runs the bleachers  all the way around the stadium twice. Next he runs a 200 Meter backwards. Then we start practice.
For cross country we run at full sprint 3 miles and 800 meters on the clock. Then we run the straights at full speed and jog the corners for 800 meter.
The last thing we do is a 400 meter worm down and go home.  At home we do weight training with 5 pound weights. "Out of your pocket, in your ear!" practice. We do that so that Daniel can handle running over 3 miles at full speed pumping his arms.
We should not have had practiced at the Central Dauphin track this week. The Harrisburg City Islanders purchased the field for practice for their game on Saturday.

The team did not seem to mind that we were using the track while they practiced. Unknown to me, the islanders were talking to Daniel and was impressed by his work ethics. The islanders practice was not as hard as Daniel's practice.  They acted like media, asking about his parents and calling over players on the team who was born in Jamaica.  As I told Daniel many times, he just does not represent the North East United States, he also represents the people of Jamaica.
The team  General Manager told the Islander's coach that he should have Daniel lead them in getting the players in shape.  The coach agreed.
Daniel and I wished the players luck in their game on Saturday and they wished Daniel luck in his first cross country meet of the year. The Central Dauphin's maintenance crew like always came over to wish Daniel luck and to give him encouragement.
One of the Islanders is also one of the coaches for CD East High School. He was trying to get me to put Daniel into the CD East System instead of the CD System.  I told him that that request is outside of my authority.  He would have to talk to Daniel's parents.
