2014 USATF Region 2 Meet

Daniel and his father Damine Tulloch is preparing for the Region 2 Meet in Hershey, Pa.

Daniel "the Flash" Tulloch ran in the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships Region 2 meet on Sunday Nov. 23, 2014. Unfortunately, he did not make the cut to go to the national meet at Myrtle Beach.  This spells the end of the 9 year old cross country runner for 2014. He moves on to indoor track in January 2015 as a 10 year old in the 9 and 10 Bantam age group.

The top 30 made the cut to go to nationals. Daniel missed the cut by 34 seconds over a 3K race(1.86 miles), coming across the finish line in 39th place.  Daniel was beat by 13, 9 year olds and 23, 10 year olds. He beat 9, 9 year olds and 14, 10 year olds.

The 62 children involved are the best in Pennsylvania, Up State New York, New Jersey, and Delaware.

This is how the race developed.

The "Flash" is in the red shirt, standing on the starting line, waiting for the start of the race.

At the start, this is where Daniel made his fatal mistake. He never gets off the starting line before everyone else. In fact, he is last to get off the starting line. With 61 people to beat, this puts him last and puts him behind the pack of boys in a traffic jam while the faster boys pull away.

This is when his "start" mistakes becomes apparent. We are nearly one mile into the race. Daniel is past the largest part of the mountain.  But as you can see, more than 30 boys are ahead of him.

With about a quarter mile to go, Daniel is starting to run out of time.  He beat two boys going up the last steep hill. However, because he did not beat most of the boys out at the start, by this time, it became a hopeless battle to make nationals.

We are at the end of the race. Keep in mind that the officials ran 12 races with over 500 children trying to qualify for nationals from below 8 years old to 18 years old. Some of the parents of these children may not be exactly right in the head. Can you spot the nut in this video?

I don't care where you are, you must always keep an eye out for nuts. This particular person is fighting a bad divorce. He thought that I was a private investigator spying on him for his wife. This could have become a bad situation for both of us.

What is next?

This week, Daniel will start to prepare for the UNITED AGE GROUP TRACK COACHES ASSOCIATION (UAGTCA ) meets.

First race will be in January, 2015 in Philadelphia. He will be running the 800 and 1500. This will prepare him for the USATF Indoor Track meet series in March 2015.

2014 USATF Mid-Atlantic Association Junior Cross Country Championship

Daniel "The Flash" Tulloch

This meet showed that I am getting old. First, I forgot how to get to the meet in Philadelphia. It is a good thing that I forgot the time it started as well.  I thought that the race started at 9:00 AM, when in fact, the race started at 10:30 AM. That gave me time to get to the meet.
Once Daniel got ready to run, we could not find the starting line.  No signs, no announcement  at the starting line, and no one told us where to go.  I turned around and saw a white flag, then a gun sound. Daniels race started on the other end of the field.

Daniel Stepped up his play!
Daniel ran over to the starting line. By the time Daniel started running, everyone had a big head start, about 200 Meters. Ten boys started the race. The meet Director told me that only ten boys can qualify to go to the Regional meet.  Twelve children was suppose to start. Daniel was the eleventh person of the starting line. Number 12 was in the "Portal Potty" unaware that the race started.

2014 USATF Mid-Atlantic Association Junior Olympic

In the previous blogs, I made you aware that Daniel had a heavy amount of hill training. He also had a lot of speed training at CD High School.  We practiced catching people mostly fast adults on the track, running 3 1/2 Miles at a time.

Daniel needed all this training to catch and pass number 10. Number ten had trouble running the hills where Daniel had the advantage.  Daniel caught and passed him about 1 mile from the end of the race, making Daniel the 10th person to cross the finish line and qualify for the Region 2 Meet in Hershey, Pa.

As I am trying to get Daniel to improve his time toward the end of the race, you can hear a lady in the back ground telling another spectator that Daniel started the race late and still beat one of his opponents. She was impressed with his performance.
The Flash had a time of 15 Minutes and 32.12 Seconds in this 3K (1.86 Mile) Race.

The Next Step!

At the Region 2 meet in Hershey, Pa. on Nov. 23rd, the top 20 (9 and 10) year olds will receive medals. The top 30 athletes will qualify to advance to the USATF National Junior Olympic Championship December 13th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

At the Region 2 Hershey meet, the course is grass, some hills, and some in the woods. It also features a wide-open layout towards the finish line that makes it perfect for spectators to view championship races.

Some hills my foot. This is a mountain.
