2014 Central Dauphin Track and Field Camp

Daniel jumping his first place tie at 7 feet 10 inches

The 2014 Central Dauphin Track and Field Camp is for children from second thru eighth grade.
The camp is more of an overall introduction to most track and field events. Head Coach Tom Eck of the Central Dauphin Rams conducts this camp every year.

Coach Henry Klugh, his Distance coach was at the camp and he is very well known in the Middle distance / Distance fraternity. Coach Rick Leuschner showed Daniel the correct way to hurdle. Rich was Stephanie Tulloch's coach when she was at CD High School. Both have trained multiple state qualifiers as well as state medalists. So Daniel Tulloch has received great coaching.

The flash is only in third grade but rans long distance with a few of the assistant coaches. They found that it was not easy to keep up with Daniel.

This camp ran from Tuesday May 27 to Friday May 30, 2014 rain or shine. We had days of rain and cold. The first day was no fun at all. The best day was the last day, the day of the track meet.

Softball Throw 2nd place 61 feet 4 inches

This camp taught Daniel how to set up his starting block for a running event.

In USATF, Daniel will not have to use starting blocks until he reaches the 11 and 12 Division. He will be ready for it when the time comes.

The 100 Meter Run using starting blocks for the first time, 18.6 Seconds.

Daniel running the 50 Meter Hurdles for the first time in exhibition. His time 13.4 seconds .

2014 Central Dauphin Camp 400 Meter Run

This video is most of Daniel's 400 Meter Run. He got off to a slow start as he always does. Then he plays catch up though out the race. As the leader hit the wall (got tired around the 200 Meter mark) Daniel closed in but as my camera battery failed, I could not video the end of the race. The winner's time was 1 Minute 33 Seconds. Daniel's time was 1 Minute 33.5 Seconds. I dispute Daniel's time because the race was extremely close at the end. I believe that it should have been more like 1 Minute 33.2 Seconds. But a second place is a second place.

Conclusion of the Camp

At the moment, Daniel is very competitive against people his age in Central Dauphin. Coach Tom Eck would like to have him in 6 years if he is still coaching and if Daniel is still running. But we are  looking for Daniel to be competitive on a National and World Level, not on a local or state level.

To increase his speed, Daniel must concentrate on his arm movement and increase his stride when he runs. It appears that he gets excited and forgets his training when he runs.

Next week is the Art Madric First State Outdoor Track Classic at Caravel Academy in Bear, Delaware.

May 17, 2014 Lower Marion Meet #3

Daniel Coming in second in the 3200 Meter Run (2 Miles)

2 Mile Race

Daniel had a chance to do some development work in the 2 mile race. At age 9, he has time to prefect this race before he starts running this race for real at 11 years old. In this race, he came in second with a time of 6 Minute, 39 Seconds. We need to get his time down to 4 Minutes and 20 Seconds by 9th grade in order to make the WPIAA State meet. Daniel is in 3rd grade now. So we have some time to work on this. It appears that his training paid off at the end of this race.

We are still working on Daniel's speed. This is why he ran the 400 Meter. His time was 1 Minute and 31 Seconds. His best time in the 400 Meters was 1 Minute 25 seconds at the Hershey meet.

May 10, 2014 Lower Marion Meet #2

This is Daniel's first 4 by 100 Relay Team. They ran at the Lower Marion Meet #2 on May 10th in Philadelphia County.

April and May are the months were Daniel learns what he needs to focus on when practicing for future outdoor USATF track meets for the year.  At the Lower Marion Development Meet on May 10th, Daniel ran the 3200 Meter (2 Miles), the 800 Meter (1/2 Mile), and for the first time, a 4 x 100 meter relay.

Here is Daniel's race

The results of the race

If you review the 3200 Meter race, you will see that Daniel was in second place most of the time. Charles Murgia of the Philadelphia "Ambler"  Track Club was in a class by himself and ran a first class race. At one point Daniel was in first place. Toward the end of the race, Daniel dropped to third place. At the end, Jonas Walton of the GPAL Track Club took off but Daniel could not respond in kind.

Daniel's coach Andrew Lofton of the St. Luke Spirit Track Club told Daniel that he needs more speed work such as doing latters. That is running 100 Meters, 200 Meters, 400 Meters, 200 Meters, and 100 Meters all in one session. Another problem that became apparent is the fact that Daniel does not spread his legs wide enough and does not lean forward when he runs. Daniel has the endurance part down pat. It is the speed that we need now to be a first class national runner.

The other events
The 2 mile, 3200 Meter race took a lot out of Daniel and it showed in the 800 Meter Run.

2014 Hershey Track and Field Games

The 400 Meter Run at East Pennsboro High School Track

Daniel ran in his first Hershey Track and Field Games on Sunday May 4, 2014. The Hershey program in relation to the 9 and 10 age group is for children interested in sprinting events such as the 50 Meter, 100 Meter, 200 Meter, and 400 Meter. They also have events such as the Softball Throw and Standing Long Jump. These field events are not sanctioned by USATF or AAU.

Daniel is a long distance runner. He runs the 800 Meter, 1500 Meter, and 3000 Meter Runs. So why did I have Daniel enter into the Hershey Track and Field Games?  Because it is time to see how well he can do with local people his age in short distance running. I have not had him do this since age 5. I had him get involved in the Softball Throw just to see what he could do. Daniel up to this point never threw a softball.

We did not know who was racing against Daniel in the 200 or 400 Meter runs. They mix the age groups together. They did not announce who was in what group and they did not post the results of any given race.

No,  Daniel did not give up as I was talking about on the video. He remembered his training. I did not. If you watch the 400 Meter race closely, You will see that the leader was moving away. He was not in Daniel's age group. The other boy is in his age group. Daniel stayed with him for 300 Meters. Daniel understood that his opponent was running at full speed. Daniel was not and Daniel was "dogging" him. The race is 400 Meters not 300 Meters. With 100 Meters left, Daniel made his move and his opponent could not respond. Therefore Daniel won the race.

Daniel came in first place in the 400 Meter run. He will advance to the Hershey Track and Field District Meet to be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 10:00 AM. The meet will be held at Buck Swank Stadium,  Palmyra Area Middle School in Palmyra, Pa.  The rain date will be Sunday, June15, 2014 at 1:00 PM.  First and second place winners of the 400 Meter Run at districts will advance to the State Meet to be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Penn State University Track in State College, Pa.

An argument broke out between Daniel and Stephanie concerning his performance in the 400 Meter.   Stephanie did not know that Daniel was competing against children older than him. To us, it appeared that Daniel was not running his best. However, if you compare 9 year old Daniel's time of 1 Minute, 25. 75 Second vs. 9 year old Stephanie's time of 1 Minute, 47 Seconds, Daniel did fine. What was 9 Year old Darnell's time. I could not run this race. I sucked!

The flash received second place in the 200 Meter Run with a time of 40.37 Seconds. In the Softball Throw, he received fourth place with a distance of 62 feet, 4 Inches.
